My research interests include determining appropriate preventive measures for illnesses considered
"biopsychosocial" in origin. Obesity and restrictive eating disorders are problems that
disproportionately affect girls and women, are associated with distinct risk factors, and have
high treatment failures. Prevention, then, seems like the most appropriate public health response.
Before we can establish preventive measures, however, we need to learn more about the epedimiology
of these seemingly opposite problems through an understanding of girls' social networks, response to
to physician counseling, and their relationship to social stigma. Research in this area requires
the bridging of many disciplines that have interested me for many years including pediatrics,
psychiatry, epidemiology nutrition, and sociology.
