Celebrate Parents Weekend
![]() The North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center offers a weekend retreat for parents of children who have been burned. This retreat offers parents the opportunity to meet other parents who share a similar experience. It is a time to share stories, to ask questions, and to gain confidence. Celebrate Parents Weekend is about healing for parents that can help them help their children to heal in a more positive way. A burn injury to a child can be devastating for a parent, regardless of the size of the burn or the age of the child. When children are hurt, despite efforts to keep them safe, there is often guilt and blame associated with the experience. Guilt is a normal response. Another normal response can be feeling a need to make everything right. In dealing with the guilt and the desire to make everything better, parents can confuse what is best for the child vs. what will make them, as parents, feel better. Parents usually struggle with their own emotional response to a burn injury and are often at a loss to know how to best support their child, not only through the physical healing, but throughout the more extensive emotional and psychosocial healing process.
