There are opportunities for CAMPOS students to be involved in many ways at the Regional Campuses during their Application and Individualization Phase. Students can volunteer in the community, and shadow physicians who work with Spanish-speaking patients. Below are some of those opportunities.

CAMPOS Opportunities – Asheville Regional Campus

Goal: Continue longitudinal opportunities to develop Spanish-speaking skills and integration with underserved Spanish-speaking populations in Western North Carolina during the Application phase while in Asheville.

Asheville CAMPOS Champions

  • Dr. Frank Castelblanco – MAHEC Regional Education
  • Dr. Benjamin Gilmer – MAHEC Family Medicine
  • Sarah Piepenbrink – MAHEC Family Medicine

Linguistic Opportunities:

  • Integrated Biweekly “Spanish Club” meetings will take place at MAHEC and will include 12 interprofessional, longitudinal sessions as the foundation for a our linguistics curriculum. Participants will include UNC students, MAHEC FM and OB residents and UNC pharmacy students and residents.
  • We plan to have linguistic software in our library available for students who would like to pursue a self-study approach.
  • Integrated sessions with the UNC campus and Dr. Aleman will be organized this year. Frequency of sessions TBD.

Community and Population Health Integration

  • An intentional effort will be made to identify students who are Spanish-speaking and connect them with community preceptors who have large Spanish-speaking patient panels.
  • ABCCM clinic: There will be monthly opportunities to work with an interprofessional team at one of Asheville’s underserved, free clinics which serves a predominant Spanish-speaking population.
  • Veccinos: There will be additional monthly opportunities to serve at a rural, underserved community clinic focused on providing care to migrant farm workers.
  • Hendersonville Migrant Farm Clinic: In concert with the Hendersonville Family Medicine Residency Program, there are seasonal opportunities to integrate with and provide care to migrant farm workers in Hendersonville County. Dr. Andy Morris, Hendersonville Family Medicine Program is the contact person.

Longitudinal Community Projects:

  • Capstone Project: All students will have the opportunity to pursue a longitudinal project working with an underserved Spanish-speaking population during their MS3 and MS4 years if they desire. These projects will need to be student led, but we can help link them to community resources to achieve their goals.

Global Health Opportunity:

  • A global health brigade to rural Honduras will be available to a maximum of 10 students annually. This will be a 2-week interprofessional experience with the MAHEC FM department. Credit for this experience will be offered through the UNC school of medicine. An extended two-week linguistic experience attached to this experience will be optional for those students who are interested.
