Background: Mike worked as a health educator in Quelzaltenango, Guatemala from January 2003 to July 2003. Prior to medical school, he worked as a research assistant recruiting English and Spanish patients for clinical studies. He also was a volunteer for El Centro Latino.

Dawn Caviness

Background: Dawn worked as a RN/Spanish interpreter at Randolph Hospital emergency department and as a diabetes educator to Latino patients in Chatham Hospital.

Charles Clover

Background: Charles worked briefly as a tranlator in Bolivia for American doctors.

Robert Eli

Background: Robert studied Spanish in high school and in college and did a two month stay in Costa Rica.

Background: Cory did an immersion experience in Costa Rica and prior to medical school, he served as an interpreter at the Student Health Action Committee (SHAC).

Claud Grigg

Background: While a Duke undergraduate, Claud did a service learning project where he served as an interpreter in a nutrition clinic. He also served as a tutor to members of the Spanish-speaking community in Durham.

Liz Hoffman

Background: Growing up in south Texas, Liz was surrounded by Spanish. She served as an ELS teacher for elementary school children. She served as a volunteer coordinator for a volunteer health clinic that served Spanish-speaking patients.

David Johnson

Background: David has had a variety of experiences in Spanish-speaking countries. He served as a translator for a medical mission in Guatemala, and spent two months studying in Argentina.

Amy Lambert

Background: While in Chile in July 2005, Amy lived with a family that included her in every facet of their lives. She was impressed by the focus on the family and how 'family time' was the fabric of life.

Christina Martin

Background: Christina served as a maternity care coordinator for Spanish-speaking patients prior to medical school. She also volunteered as a birth assistant for Spanish-speaking women, and she worked as an ELS teacher.

Background: Anna did volunteer work in both Guatemala and Peru, and prior to medical school, worked at al surgical practice in Washington, DC.

Kristoff Olson

Background: Prior to medical school, Kristoff spent a year in Ecuador where he taught English at a university in Quito. He gained a keen appreciation for the cultural issues that can influence health care.

Erik Olsson

Background: Erik was born in Panama and continues to go there every year. Prior to medical school, he volunteered for Patient Relations at UNC Hospitals for two years.

Suha Patel

Background: Suha volunteered as a doula at UNC Labor and Delivery during her undergraduate years and worked with many Spanish-speaking patients.

Teresa Samulski

Background: Teresa worked as a bilingual volunteer at UNC Children's Hospital. In working with families, she gained an appreciation for the alienation felt by Hispanic families when they enter the health care system.

Jamila Schwartz

Background: While in Guatemala, Jamila volunteered in clinics and saw first hand the poverty and desperate need for medical care and the challenge to the health care system due lack of funding and of physicians.

Kevin Sitko

International Experience: Ecuador

Background: Kevin recently spent five weeks in Ecuador volunteering in an orphanage for disabled persons, none of whom spoke English.

Emily VanderSchaaf

International Experience:

Background: Before medical school, Emily worked in an after-school program for children infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS in Washington, DC. The majority of the children came from low-income families, several of whom could not speak English.

Melissa Villanueva

Background: Melissa uses volunteer experiences(teaching ELS and interpreting at SHAC) to help her maintain her Spanish skills.

Ben Waldorf

International Experience: Argentina
ICM Site: Buncombe County Health Department
Background: Ben deferred acceptance to UNC in part to learn to speak Spanish. He enrolled in full-immersion language school in Argentina. He went on to work with a bi-lingual family practice in Nashville in which he interacted with Spanish-speaking physicians and patients.
