Research Interests
My primary research interest is in elucidating the role of vanilloid receptors (TRPV) in the mediation of pain perception in the dorsal horn of mammals in animal models of cystitis and arthritis. Recently, this line of research has expanded to include the study of activation of astrocytes and microglia in mouse models of nociception.
Other interests include amino acid neurotransmitters, their receptors and associated proteins in the postsynaptic densities in the brain and spinal cord, nitric oxide, and the functional role of the protein palladin in reactive astrocytes and glial scar formation after injury to the central nervous system.

3-D stacking of images obtained with laser confocal microscopy of multiple color immunofluorescence staining for TRPV1 (red), NK1 (green) and pERK (blue) allows visualization of internalization of NK1 in neurons of the deep dorsal horn (arrow), induced by noxious stimulation of the rat urinary bladder with mustard oil.
