    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p>July 2012 - Sarah Kenan Graham Professor <a href="http://www.med.unc.edu/cellbiophysio/faculty/lund" class="internal-link">Kay Lund</a> received a new, five-year R01 grant totalling $1.5 million dollars from the <a class="external-link" href="http://www.nia.nih.gov/">National Institute on Aging</a>. The grant will study the impact of aging, insulin and insulin-like growth factor signaling on intestinal stem cells and their ability to repair and regenerate the intestinal epithelium after radiation. Assistant Professor <a href="http://www.med.unc.edu/cellbiophysio/faculty/magness" class="internal-link">Scott Magness</a> is co-investigator on this award.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p><i>May 2011 </i>- The Fellner Fellowship Committee is pleased to announce that two students will be  <a href="http://www.med.unc.edu/cellbiophysio/education-training/graduate-education/graduate-program-physiolo/maren-fund-information" class="internal-link">Dr. Susan Fellner Physiology Graduate Student Research Fellowship (Fellner Fellowship)</a> recipients this year. The award will fund both Sarah Bortvedt (<a href="http://www.med.unc.edu/cellbiophysio/faculty/lund" class="internal-link">Lund lab</a>) and Rylan Larsen (<a href="http://www.med.unc.edu/cellbiophysio/faculty/philpot" class="internal-link">Philpot lab</a>) for 2011-2012.</p>
<p>The Fellner Fellowship is a one-year, merit-based award available to Cell &amp; Molecular Physiology Graduate Program students who have passed the thesis proposal at the time of application. In addition to paying stipend, tuition, fees and health insurance, the fellowship provides extra stipend funding of $5000 above the current rate.</p>
<p>We encourage the Physiology Graduate Program students who meet the requirements to submit applications when announcements are made for the next cycle of the Fellner Fellowships, in spring 2012.</p>]]></content:encoded>

    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p><i>March 2011 - </i>The winter edition of the UNC publication <i>endeavors </i>features the work of several department faculty members.  The series <a class="external-link" href="http://endeavors.unc.edu/big_bad_bacteria">"The Good, The Bad and the Unknown: Bacteria in Your Body"</a> by Mark Derewicz includes Dr. Kay Lund's research into the correlation between bacteria in the gut and type 2 diabetes, and Dr. Andrea Azcarate Peril's research on the differences in fecal bacterial composition between formula-fed and breastfed infants.</p>
<p>Also in this issue, Cheney lab graduate student Alex Raines wrote the article <a class="external-link" href="http://endeavors.unc.edu/cold_called">"Cold-Called,"</a> which outlines the Otey lab's work on pancreatic cancer and how Dr. Carol Otey's collaboration with <a class="external-link" href="http://www.uwgi.org/Directory/Directory.Resultpage.aspx?PersonID=1009">Teri Brentnall, MD,</a> at the University of Washington began with an unexpected phone call.  Raines also explains how Otey met UNC surgeon <a class="external-link" href="http://www.med.unc.edu/surgonc/faculty/kimhj">H.J. Kim, MD,</a> and their work to combine basic science and clinical approaches to advance the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer.</p>
<p>Alex is an MD-PhD student currently working toward his PhD in neurobiology.  Photographs of Drs. Otey and Kim that accompany the article are also Alex's work.</p>]]></content:encoded>
