Please welcome Andrea Azcárate-Peril, PhD, a molecular microbiologist who comes to UNC-Chapel Hill from the laboratory of Dr. Todd Klaenhammer in the Food Science Department at NC State. Dr. Azcárate-Peril earned her PhD in Microbiology from the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán (S. M. de Tucumán, Tucumán, Argentina) in 2000. She possesses extensive experience in molecular biology methods, signal transduction and microbial genomics and transcriptomics, and has worked with a range of microorganisms including Gram-positive lactic acid bacteria and their bacteriophages, especially from the genus Lactobacillus; Gram-negative bacteria; and fungus.

She will serve as the interim director of the Microbiome Core Facility, will conduct her own research and collaborate with others in the effort to characterize the myriad species of microorganisms that colonize the human gastrointestinal tract.
