June 2012 – Please welcome our summer undergraduate researchers!

cassidy Ian CassidyRawls lab

Ian received a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) from the UNC Office of Undergraduate Research to conduct research in the Rawls lab using forward genetic analysis to identify new genes controlling adipose tissue morphology. Ian is an undergraduate student at UNC-CH.

Sruthi CherkurTzima lab

“I am a rising senior at UNC, majoring in Anthropology and double minoring in Chemistry and Medical Anthropology. I am also studying pre-medicine and hope to eventually attend UNC medical school. I have been working in the Tzima Lab as Lab Technician for the past one year and absolutely love working with everyone in the lab and look forward to spending another year in the group!”

leathers Kimberly Leathers – Fanning lab

“I am a senior at North Carolina Central University. My current major is Biology and I have a B.A., Psychology from NCCU as well. I am not enrolled in a summer program but I am continuing ongoing research this summer with Dr. Laurel Rodgers in the Fanning Lab. The experiments that I will perform will test to see if the zonula occludens, ZO-1 and ZO-2 in particular, regulate focal adhesions in wound healing.”

moser-katz Tyler Mozer-KatzTzima lab

Tyler is a rising junior and Biology major at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is working with graduate student Maggie McCormick in the Tzima lab on the LAD project observing mouse response to PECAM.

ohiri Joyce OhiriZylka lab

Joyce is a rising junior at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, majoring in Biology and Bioethics. She is part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE-REU) and her research project in the Zylka lab is: “Understanding the Underlying Mechanism of Chronic Pain”.

perez Eliezer Perez Tzima lab

“I’m a rising Senior at University of Puerto Rico at Cayey. My major is Natural Sciences. My project consists of testing Compound B (a protein found by the Tzima lab to cause a positive response on hearts after infarction) on mice cardiomyocytes, to see if it has the same effect on cardiomyocytes as it does in endothelial cells.”

Eliezer is a scholar with the UNC SOLAR Program.

robinson Adam RobinsonCaron lab

“I’m very happy to be working in the Physiology dept! I am a rising senior majoring in biology and chemistry at UNC-Chapel HIll. I was awarded the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) to work in Dr Caron’s lab this summer. I am working with Klara Klein, who is studying the effects Adrenomedullin and the receptor CXCR7 have in cardiac development.”

saunders Nzingha Saunders – Fanning lab

Nzingha is a student at North Carolina Central University majoring in Biology with a concentration in Pre-Med. She is part of the Lineberger Cancer Center’s PARTNERS Program and her research project in the Fanning lab is: The Role of Afadin and ZO1 Interaction in the Formation of Cell-Cell Junctions in Epithelial Tissues.

Additional undergraduate researchers are Nikhil Patel in the Faber lab, and Adeolu Keku and Ana Corcimaru in the Reid lab.
