October 22, 2012 – Drs. William Arendshorst and Robert Tarran have been awarded an NC TraCS $5K-$50K Pilot Grant for their project titled “SPLUNC1: A Novel Regulator of Renal Sodium Excretion.” Dr. Arendshorst is a Professor of Cell Biology & Physiology, and Dr. Tarran is an Assistant Professor of Medicine with a joint appointment in Cell Biology & Physiology.

The objective of this project is to test the hypothesis that SPLUNC1 plays an important role in electrolyte homeostasis. We shall achieve this goal by comparing the ability of wild type vs. SPLUNC1 knockout mice to handle Na+ loads. A better understanding of renal SPLUNC1 interactions may lead to the development of novel therapeutics to treat hypertension.
