MRI is an imaging method that uses radiofrequency waves directed at protons, the nuclei of hydrogen atoms, in a strong magnetic field to show differences in the water content and distribution in various body tissues. For the MRI participants will be placed comfortably on a sliding table and then covered up to about the chest area.
The entire process takes about 90 minutes during which participants can listen to music or watch movies. Because of the strong magnetic field used for the MRI the imaging center has a screening form you must fill out prior to the MRI. It will ask whether you have any metal plates, pins, screws or surgical staples in your body, if you have ever had a bullet or shrapnel in your body or if you have ever worked with metal. Tooth fillings are acceptable but braces will distort the MRI too much to be used. You will also be asked to remove anything that might degrade the MRI images, i.e. hairpins, jewelry, eyeglasses, hearing aids and any removable dental work.
