Research Summary

Liara Gonzalez uses large animal models to study the mechanisms that control intestinal stem cell dynamics during clinically relevant disease states both in injury and recovery as well as the role of progenitor cells in determining tissue viability following injury. The training she acquired as a veterinary clinician-scientist has contributed to her success in developing and utilizing the pig as a translational model to study intestinal stem cell biology. She has been able to apply advanced laboratory techniques to solve clinically significant problems. She is using a 3D stem cell culture method to test stem cell targeted therapies to hasten epithelial repair in an in vitro injury model that can later be tested in vivo. She has been involved in collaborative research on the role of esophageal submucosal glands in the development of Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma (CGIBD member Katherine Garman) and the optimization of a porcine intestinal transplant model for the study of graft viability to improve quality of life and outcome for patients suffering from intestinal failure (Dr. Debra Sudan).

Relevance of Research to CGIBD Mission:   Dr. Gonzalez is the co-director of the Large Animal Models Core and she has used the pig model to study intestinal injury and recovery. She has collaborated with Katherine Garman using the pig model to study esophageal adenocarcinoma.
