Professor of Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology Medical Director of Liver Transplantation Diplomate: Clinical Informatics, Transplant Hepatology, Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine

Dr. Fix is the Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at UNC. Prior to joining UNC, he was the Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. He also served as Associate Provider Informaticist on the Epic Clinical Optimization Resource Team for transplant at Providence St. Joseph Health. He is an Epic certified Physician Builder (Advanced, Analytics) and holds Epic certifications in Power User and Phoenix Transplant. He has expertise in medical education and training and previously served on the executive committee for the ACGME Review Committee for Internal Medicine. He led an innovative competency-based pilot program to incorporate transplant hepatology training in gastroenterology fellowship, thereby shortening certification requirements for both specialties by one year. This dual certification pathway is now an approved pathway by the ABIM. He is an expert on COVID-19 and liver disease and serves on the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) COVID-19 Task Force as co-chair of the Clinical Oversight and Education Subcommittee. He also serves on the AASLD Online Learning Committee. His informatics interests include EHR optimization and leveraging the EHR to capture cirrhosis quality metrics for quality improvement and reporting.
