CME Mission

The purpose of the Office of Continuing Medical Education of the School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is to facilitate improved patient care by sponsoring educational activities that maintain, develop and/or enhance the knowledge, skills, and professional performance of physicians, allied health practitioners, and other health professionals in the State of North Carolina.

The goals of the Office of Continuing Medical Education are to:

I. Sponsor activities that offer physicians and allied health practitioners opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills in the areas of medical practice, non-medical aspects of patient care (social, ethical, and legal issues), and teaching (both medical students and residents). C) collaborate with allied health professionals in the School of Medicine, partners in the health affairs schools, and community health agencies to enrich and diversify CME program opportunities.

D) seek to extend the reach of the University and the Health Care System across the state, in accordance with the long-standing tradition of the University and the School of Medicine.

E) offer a variety of educational activities that enable physicians to maintain their professional credentials.

II. Develop and follow a business plan that:

a) aligns with the mission and priorities of the School of Medicine, the Health Care System, and the University.

b) provides unparalleled customer service to our participants and stakeholders.

c) creates a working environment that is conducive to producing top quality educational programs

d) practices the principles of continuous quality improvement.

The target audience includes all UNC School of Medicine and Health Care faculty, UNC medical school alumni, UNC affiliated Area Health Education Center (AHEC) physicians, physicians, allied health practitioners, and other health care professionals across the State of North Carolina. In addition, some CME activities attract a regional, national and/or international audience.

The educational formats offered include regularly scheduled Grand Rounds and other recurring activities, as well as annual specialty updates, mini-fellowships, preceptorships, and jointly sponsored meetings. Faculty outreach activities provide presentations to physicians and allied health practitioners across the state in regional community hospitals.
