Child/Family Evaluation Program

The Child/Family Evaluation Program (formerly known as the Child Forensic Evaluation Program) has now replaced the Child Mental Health Evaluation Program (CMHEP) as of 6/30/06.

 

Sound Decision Making in Cases of Alleged Abuse

Program Overview and Objectives: This workshop is designed to improve decision-making in cases of suspected child abuse. A primary goal is to identify barriers to sound decision-making about the validity of abuse allegations, including cognitive errors common in the field. Subjective factors that undermine objectivity in case decisions will be explored. Research on factors that enhance critical thinking will be discussed. Through individual and small group exercises, participants will be encouraged to examine their own decision-making processes as well as those of a group.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to do the following:
  • Identify several cognitive errors that impair sound decision-making
  • Discuss the role of subjective factors in the decision process that may undermine professional objectivity
  • Discuss the principles of critical thinking as applied to cases of suspected child abuse

Child Forensic Interviewing: Foundations of Good Practice

About the Workshop: This workshop will provide an overview of the "what" and the"why" of good practice in interviewing children about allegations of child abuse. The workshop will emphasize balancing the art and the science of child forensic interviewing to maximize information gathering while minimizing errors of both undercalling and overcalling abuse. Topics will include the disclosure typology and pre-interviwing planning, interview phases, child suggestability, and appropriate vs. inappropriate questioning.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants should increase their ability to effectively care for clients by being able to do the following:

  • Describe the categories of the disclosure typology and their use in interview planning
  • Discuss the various phases of a blanced child forensic interview
  • Explain and use the recycling funnel approach to child interviewing
  • Describe interview strategies to minimize child suggestibility concerns

Child Medical Evaluation Program

Pediatric Sexual Assault

Who Should Attend
Nurses, physicians, emergency services personnel, and law enforcement as well as any other interested healthcare professional.

Description
The North Carolina Children's Justic Task Force findings recommend the need for improved coordination and training for child abuse/sexual assault, and access to health professional staff trained in medical evaluations of these victims is limited. This workshop will lay the foundation for the knowledge needed to manage the pediatric sexual assault victim.
