Enabling Genomic Research Through Microfluidics

Through the use of what is now the well established field of Microfluidics (the handling and manipulation of nano- and picoliter fluid volumes), research in genetics and genomics is being revolutionized. The Fluidigm technology enables experimental design and execution previously considered impractical, if not impossible.

Following a brief introduction to the core Fluidigm technology, we will review some recently published examples of work being done in the field of gene expression with a focus on Single-Cell studies, Digital PCR (limiting dilution quantitative mutant allele determination); and clearing the sample prep bottleneck in Targeted Next Generation Resequencing.

 

Pedja Sekaric is the Field Application Specialist for Real Time PCR at Fluidigm Corporation. Prior to joining Fluidigm he held the same position at Roche, supporting Real Time PCR and DNA microarrays.
Dr. Sekaric also has extensive background in Molecular and Cell Biology of cancer and earned his PhD in Molecular Biology from University of Belgrade, Serbia and did postdoctoral work at the University of Massachussetts Medical School.

Steven Homan is the Field Application Specialist for Sequencing at Fluidigm. He received a B.S. in Molecular Biology from Michigan State and Masters Degree in Molecular Plant Science at Texas A&M.
He did Fragment Analysis and Sequencing via Capillary Electrophoresis at the USDA Cotton Germplasm Research unit in College Station, TX. Since 2006 Steven has been focused on sequencing,working first as an FAS at Applied Biosystems and then Roche 454.
