Benny Profile

Benny L. Joyner, Jr., MD, MPH

Clinical Co-Director

Dr. Joyner first graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1993 when he received his BA in Education. He then returned to UNC to complete his undergraduate medical and public health degrees in 2002. After completing his residency and chief residency in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, he returned to North Carolina in 2006 to pursue a fellowship in pediatric critical care, joining the faculty in 2009. He is a PALS and ATLS Instructor as well as a TeamSTEPPS coach. His research focus includes systems improvement and the use of simulation to systematically improve the quality of patient care. Dr. Joyner developed the pediatric simulation program, conducting high-fidelity simulations within the CSPSC and in-situ at North Carolina Children’s Hospital. Dr. Joyner also co-teaches the Inter-Professional Teamwork and Communication Course with faculty from the Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy. He officially joined the Clinical Skills and Patient Simulation Center in 2012 as Clinical Co-Director.

Julie Messina

Julie Messina, MA

Director of Assessment

Julie earned her BA at Elon University in Women’s and Gender Studies and her MA in International Health Promotion from the University of Brighton in the UK. After finishing her Master’s, Julie worked at Natural England on the Walking for Health project, Europe’s largest public health intervention. Julie joined the CSPSC team in June 2013, bringing with her experience in English language education, health promotion and education, management, and international healthcare. Julie also serves as the Director for the Office of Continuing Professional Development.

Jim Profile

Jim Barrick, BA, NREMT-P

Human Patient Simulation Coordinator

Jim is a graduate of St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, North Carolina with a degree in Biology. He came on board with the CSPSC in January of 2007 after 29 years in EMS. He has over 20 years of in-hospital experience as a Flight Paramedic at UNC Air Care to complement his pre-hospital experience. At UNC Air Care, he served for nine years as Lead Flight Paramedic and chaired the Safety, Equipment, and Personnel Committees. Among various certifications, he is an instructor in ACLS, ITLS, and PALS. He brings knowledge, teaching, hands-on experience and commitment to this growing technology.

Gene Profile

Gene Hobbs

Clinical Instructor, Department of Pediatrics; Associate Director of Simulation

Gene comes to the Skills Center after having worked as the Medical Simulation Coordinator for the Duke Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center since 2001. Gene has an extensive background in simulation that includes experience in resource and curriculum development. Having been certified since 1993, Gene is an avid scuba diver and is a member of the Undersea and Hyberbaric Medical Society and is cofounder of the Rubicon Foundation.

Brian New Profile

Brian Loveland, MPH

Assistant Director of Clinical Skills

Brian is a graduate of Gettysburg College with a BS in Biology and earned his Master of Public Health at East Carolina University. He has been with the CSPSC since June  2010, first as Clinical Skills Coordinator and now as the Assistant Director. Brian serves as the TeamSTEPPS Facilitator for N.C. Memorial Hospital’s TICKER program. Brian also volunteers as an EMT with Orange County Emergency Services.

Jackson Szeto

Jackson Szeto, BA

Technical Support Analyst

A 2008 UNC Greensboro graduate in Broadcasting, Jackson is the exam coordinator for the CSPSC. He brings over 7 years of end-user environment experience to his work here, providing support for tech-related issues. Joining the team in August 2012, Jackson utilizes his specific skill set to incorporate multimedia format into training materials and further enhance student experiences with simulations.

Kewana Smith

Kewana Smith, BA

Standardized Patient Coordinator

Kewana is a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science. She joined the CSPSC in September 2013 after working for over 10 years in health education and promotion. Kewana also has several years of management, casework, and staffing experience.

Ada Profile

Ada Southerland, BA

Business Services Coordinator

Ada is a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate with a BA in Psychology and worked in that field for 18 years with Orange Person Chatham Mental Health Services. Ada first came to work at UNC in 2005 in the Office for Continuing Medical Education. Making the switch to the Office of Medical Education in 2012, Ada works in the CSPSC as well as providing curriculum support for first-year Medical Student courses and exams.
