Benny L. Joyner, Jr., MD, MPH Clinical Co-Director Dr. Joyner first graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1993 where he received his BA in Education. He then returned to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he then received his undergraduate medical and public health degree in 2002. He completed his residency and chief residency in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. He has been back in North Carolina since 2006 where he pursued a fellowship in pediatric critical care and joined the faculty in 2009 upon completion of his fellowship. He is a PALS and ATLS Instructor as well as a TeamSTEPPS coach. He has developed the pediatric simulation program conducting high-fidelity simulations within the clinical skills center and in-situ within the Children’s Hospital. His research focus includes systems improvement and the use of simulation to systematically improve the quality of patient care. Brian Loveland, MPH Assistant Director of Clinical Skills Brian is a graduate of Gettysburg College with a BS in Biology and of East Carolina University with a Masters in Public Health. He has worked with the Clinical Skills and Patient Simulation Center since June of 2010 in his position as Clinical Skills Coordinator. Brian also serves as the TeamSTEPPS Facilitator for N.C. Jim Barrick, BA, NREMT-P Human Patient Simulation Coordinator Jim is a graduate of St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, North Carolina with a degree in Biology. He came on board with the Clinical Skills and Patient Simulation Center in January of 2007 after 29 plus years in EMS. He has over 20 years of in hospital experience as a Flight Paramedic at UNC Air Care to complement his pre-hospital experience. At UNC Air Care, he served for nine years as Lead Flight Paramedic and chaired the Safety, Equipment, and Personnel Committees. Among various certifications, he is an instructor in ACLS, ITLS, and PALS. He brings knowledge, teaching, hands-on experience and commitment to this growing technology. Shelby Marx, BS Clinical Skills Training Coordinator Shelby Marx is a graduate of UNC at Chapel Hill majoring in Biology with a Chemistry minor. She was an Emergency Medicine intern during the 2010-2011 school year and plans to continue this work in the upcoming year. Shelby plans on attending medical school after graduation. Jackson Szeto, BA Graduating in 2008 at UNC Greensboro, Jackson is the exam coordinator for the clinical skills center here at UNC School of Medicine. He serves as the support for tech related issues here with over 7 years of end-user environment experience. Joining the team in August 2012, he hopes utilize his specific skillset to incorporate multimedia format into training materials and further enhance student experiences with simulations. |

Casey Strange, MA Casey is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with both her BA and MA in Sociology. She is interested in the assessment of cultural competence in the medical and human services fields. She has a high degree of fluency in Spanish and has conducted independent research in the US and Latin America. As the Standardized Patient Coordinator for the Clinical Skills Center, Casey is the newest member of the team. |
