Open Skills Labs

Check Current Open Skills Lab Available Dates here.

The Clinical Skills and Patient Simulation Center is pleased to offer medical and pharmacy students the opportunity to pratice their physical examination and interviewing skills on Patient Facilitators during our new Open Skills Labs. These labs will be offered several times throughout the year and times will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Patient Facilitators (PF) are patients cross trained on several case scenarios designed to allow students to practice on a range of various chief complaints. Students should come to the sessions prepared to discuss with the PF what areas they wish to practice on. PFs will allow the student to pratice taking the HPI and physical examination with them and will provide feedback to the student after the encounter.

Students will be asked to sign up in groups of two, allowing a classmate to watch the encounters and provide feedback as well. One group of two students may reserve time with a PF for a one hour block. All encounters will be recorded and access to the videos will be provided to the student to review anytime. No information from these encounters will be shared with any course at the School of Pharmacy or School of Medicine without the student's request to release such information.

Students may also request time, during normal business hours, with a PF that is outside the Open Skills Lab offerings. Such requests will be subject to room and PF availability. To make a request, please email Dawn Duncan at deduncan@med.unc.edu.
