Patient Facilitator

Patient Facilitator

We are now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 academic year.

What is the internship? The Patient Facilitator (PF) Internship is designed to compliment the Introduction to Clinical Medicine 1 & 2 Courses and the Open Skills Labs. PFs are selected from the undergraduate colleges and typically have an interest in applying to either medical or pharmacy school.

What are the benefits? Acceptance to the Patient Facilitator Internship provides the PF opportunities to work directly with faculty and students from the Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy. PFs will learn the basics of clinical encounters with patients, how to provide feedback to students, and have opportunities to learn procedures in our Patient Simulation Center. Our students benefit from the opportunity to practice their clinical encounters and receive feedback from the patients.

How does the program work? Completed applications (below) must be turned in by Friday August 26th. School of Medicine faculty will select applicants into the program (preference will be given to students who are juniors or seniors planning to apply to a health professional school in the next 18-24 months). PFs will be required to attend up to 10 hours of training initially before working with students. After PFs have been cleared to participate, they will be asked to sign up for available sessions. To remain in the program, a PF must complete at least ten hours of contact time each month.

How do I apply? Interested applicants should complete the application below and submit it with a cover letter to Katie Magee (kmagee@email.unc.edu) no later than Friday August 26th at 9:00pm.

You can access the current internship application here.

Additional Opportunities are available to select applicants and interest should be indicated on your application. They are as follows:

The Emergency Medicine Internship consists of assisting with clinical research studies in the UNC Emergency Department as well as evaluating various traumas in an “on-call” capacity.

The Simulator Lab Internship will consist of learning the mechanics of patient simulation and basic medical procedural techniques to help teach medical students.

If you have questions regarding the additional opportunities, contact Shelby Marx (amarx@email.unc.edu). For questions regarding the Patient Facilitator Internship, contact Katie Magee (kmagee@email.unc.edu). Shelby and Katie serve as co-Chief Interns for the 2011-2012 academic year.
