Inter-Professional Teamwork and Communication - Keys to Patient Safety Course

Overview: The Inter-Professional Teamwork and Communication (IPT) Course is taught in the fall semester. Focusing on patient safety, the IPT Course will focus teamwork and communication in a health care team setting. The course will be taught by an inter-professional team of faculty and will be offered to students at the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing. Objectives: Students will understand the roles and responsibilties of health care team members and practice interactions within those team constructs to achieve improved patient care. The course will use high fidelity human patient simulation at the Schools of Medicine and Nursing to allow students to work through acute interventions while recognizing and overcoming barriers to communication. Students will also review documented cases of medical error, how to minimize the risks of error, and learn to appropriately disclose errors when they do occur. Students will participate in a mock medical malpractice trial, hospital administrative reviews, Just Cause Analysis, and more. When: The IPT Course will meet Tuesdays, beginning August 26, from 3:00-6:00pm in Burnett-Womack Building. The last day of class will be December 6. (Note: there is no class on 10/11 or 10/18) ***Now Accepting applications to enroll for Fall 2011. IPT will be offered on Tuesdays from 3:00-6:00pm. Contact your respective school's course director for more information*** Who can take it: Enrollment is limited to 12 students from each profession for a maximum enrollment of 36 students. Only 2nd year Medical Students, 3rd year Pharmacy Students, 3rd semester Nursing Students may apply. Contact your school for more information on enrolling.
