Preparing for CPX

When and where am I scheduled to take the exam?

You will be scheduled to take the CPX at the UNC SOM Clinical Skills and Patient Simulation Center located on the third floor of Berryhill Hall. You will be notified about your assigned testing date by email. This information will also be available on one45. It is your responsibility to know your exam date. In the event that you cannot locate this information on one45, you should notify the Office of Student Affairs or CSPSC staff to confirm the testing date.

CPX takes approximately 6.5 hours to complete and will begin promptly at 8:30am. Any cases missed due to tardiness cannot be made up.

How can I prepare for the exam?

This exam is designed to assess general clinical competency. Successful completion of all core clerkships, along with a familiarity with the expectations for the Step 2 CS exam, should provide adequate preparation.

Resources that may be helpful in reviewing basic interviewing and physical exam skills, understanding how standardized patients are used in practical exams, and knowing how to make better decisions about appropriate diagnostic and management strategies include:

  • First Aid for the USMLE Step 2 CS, Fifth Edition by Tao Le and Vikas Bhushan. McGraw-Hill Medical, 2014
  • Kaplan USMLE Step 2 CS Core Cases by Phillip Brottman, 2013
