Program Overview

As part of the program, students will work together in the throughout the year writing grants, obtaining supplies, fundraising, and organizing the summer program. This preparation will include relevant workshops and seminars as a part of the Latin American Health Initiative (LAHI) on campus to help prepare and train students. Regular meetings will be held so students from the School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and School of Nursing can meet together. New CSHI members will work with past teams and UNAN early in the year to figure out the particular focus of each program.

Though program schedules may vary each year, each summer students will meet in León, Nicaragua during June for a week of orientation with the University of Nicaragua. This will be followed by 4-5 weeks on-site in Sahsa or Sauce and the surrounding communities with UNAN students and preceptors from UNAN and UNC. Students will conduct household surveys and/or research, organize workshops for community members and/or healthcare workers, and have the opportunity to spend time in the clinic guided by preceptors. The conclusion of the program will involve a wrap up session with UNAN faculty.

The sustainability of the Collaborative Sahsa Health Initiative relies on the involvement and leadership of previous program participants and the involvement of UNC faculty and UNAN faculty.
