This workshop will provide participants with information about the development of listening in children who are deaf or hard of hearing that utilize hearing aids and/or cochlear implants.

In this workshop participants will discuss how to empower parents as advocates & teachers by developing relationships that allow both the professional and parent to be proactive.

This course includes an overview of the history and evolution of cochlear implant technology, a tutorial on the basics of cochlear implant components and function, and an explanation of the UNC cochlear implant process.

Developing audition and spoken language in children with hearing loss and additional learning challenges.

Participants will select one child’s EC file from their caseload and bring it to the workshop, then utilize that file to identify needs & develop a long range plan to close gaps.

This workshop will focus on tracking and teaching the sequence of early, expanding and complex language development using the Bloom & Lahey model and the CASLLS Scales. Applications to manual and spoken communication are discussed.

Participants will become familiar with the heterogeneous profile of children who present with ANSD and appreciate the treatment philosophy and protocols used at UNC when diagnosing and determining assistive device choices for this population.
