<p>This online workshop is designed to target the phoneme level of the Auditory Learning Guide. The agenda includes information on typical babble development, speech acoustics, and why and how we do speech babble. This is a practical workshop and there will be assignments based on the presented information to turn in at the completion of the online portion for credit. If you are not currently doing speech babble, it allows you to start immediately when you return or fine tune your skills if you are already engaging in this with your current population. The workshop is appropriate for early interventionists, speech-language pathologists, teachers of the deaf, audiologists or parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.</p>
<p><strong>Biographies:</strong></p>
<p><strong>Hannah Eskridge, M.S.P., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT</strong>, is the current CASTLE Director in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the University of North Carolina.  She directs the Professional Training Program as well as coordinates staff and various other programs. Hannah also conducts Auditory Verbal Therapy sessions and is working with Holly Teagle on a multi-center research study led by NIH.  Hannah earned her Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia in the Auditory-Verbal track. She has been on faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill since 2009.</p>
<p><strong>Lillian Henderson, M.S.P., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT</strong> has worked with the CASTLE program in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the University of North Carolina since August 2002.  Lillian worked in Durham Public Schools for 5 years providing speech-language therapy for preschoolers, and Parent Participation Sessions for children in the system who were deaf or hard of hearing and learning spoken language.  Lillian earned her Master’s Degree from the University South Carolina in Columbia in the Auditory-Verbal track. She is currently the lead diagnostician for the UNC pediatric cochlear implant team.</p>

    <description>Now in its sixteenth year, the Carolina Summer Institute has provided training in the principles and practice of Auditory-Verbal Therapy to over two hundred professionals from around the country.</description>

Our institute consists of online coursework to complete prior to attendance, workshop based learning on site, along with hands-on coaching instruction in the practice of Listening and Spoken Language therapy with Certified LSL instructors. This year’s Institute will provide instruction and training to audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and teachers of the deaf who wish to develop their skills in Auditory-Verbal Therapy, a listening and spoken language approach for children with hearing loss. Topics to be covered include, but are not limited to:</p>

<p><strong>Description:</strong></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Materials needed:</span> Select one child's EC file from caseload and bring to workshop. Participants will utilize their own student's EC file to determine the student's present level of performance in language, audition, vocabulary and speech, then develop a long range plan to close the gaps in the identified areas of delay.  Participants will develop several lesson plans to address their student's needs.<strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>Biographies:</strong></p>
<p><b>Sharon Moore, CED, LSLS Cert AVT, NBCT </b>received her Bachelor of Science degree and Hearing Impaired certification from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1985. She taught preschool, kindergarten and first grade at the Central North Carolina School for the Deaf from 1985-1996. Sharon worked as a resource teacher for Guilford County Schools in the Exceptional Children’s Program in 1996. In 2000, she worked with children in the Central North Carolina Early Intervention Program for Children Who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing. Sharon has her Birth through Kindergarten certification, C.E.D., Infant Toddler credentials and National Board Certification as an Exceptional Needs Specialist. Sharon is currently a Consulting Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Exceptional Children's Division of the Dept. of Public Instruction, offering a variety of services to parents, professionals and school systems related to the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.<br /><br /><b>Michele Neal, B.S. </b>received her Bachelor of Science degree and Hearing Impaired certification from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, NC in 1985. She spent ten years working at the Schools for the Deaf in NC, four years as a high school history teacher at the Eastern NCSD, and six years as the elementary principal at the Central NCSD. Upon closure of the CNCSD Michele acquired her certification in Cross Categorical and worked in Rockingham Co. for one year as a 6th grade special education teacher and in Guilford County as a K-3 special education resource teacher. Michele joined the Office of Education Resource Support Program in April, 2003. Michele acquired National Board Certification in 2006 and became a certified See-The-Sound: Visual Phonics Trainer in 2007.<br /><br /><b>Aubrey Dubois-Quinlan, B.S., NBCT </b>received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Deaf Education in 2002 from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She worked as an itinerant teacher for the public school system for six years, serving students ages 3-21. Aubrey received her National Board Certification as an Exceptional Needs Specialist in 2007. In 2008, she joined the Resource Support Program through the Office of Education Services to provide outreach services to professionals, parents, and school systems serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students across North Carolina.</p>

<p><strong>Biographies:</strong></p>
<p><b>Christina Armfield </b>completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at Western Carolina University in the area of Communication Science and Disorders. She currently provides Auditory-Verbal therapy for students in the Alamance Burlington School System and is the lead specialist for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program for the county.<br /><br /><b>Krista Heavner, M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT </b>is an Educational Consultant for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Exceptional Children's Division of the Dept. of Public Instruction. Krista is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Speech-Language Pathology and is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist/Certified Auditory Verbal Therapist. In addition to having public school experience, she was the speech pathologist on the cochlear implant team at the University of Michigan from 2001-2006 and worked as an auditory education consultant for Advanced Bionics Corporation from 2006-2009.<br /><br /><b>Hettie A. Kenny, M.Ed., LSLS Cert. AVT </b>has been serving deaf and hard of hearing children and adults for 30 years. She holds an undergraduate degree in Speech Pathology and a Master’s in Deaf Education. Mrs. Kenny has worked in a variety of settings and positions including public school speech clinician, an early interventionist, a program coordinator, a cross-categorical teacher, and teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing. Mrs. Kenny also operated a private practice in auditory-verbal therapy and aural re/habilitation serving both children and adults. Presently Mrs. Kenny is working as a classroom teacher for deaf and hard of hearing students in Cabarrus County Schools. Her educational philosophy is to address the “whole child” through developmental language learning, behavior modification and expectations of excellence.<br /><br />Hettie Kenny is a recipient of the “Impact Through Education” Award presented by Cabarrus County School and served as a board member of the NC Chapter of the AG Bell Association.<br /><br /><b>Stephanie Payonk </b>is a Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing in Rowan County. She graduated from UNC Greensboro with a bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education and completed the Auditory Oral/Birth through Kindergarten Teacher Licensure program. Stephanie received her master’s degree from Vanderbilt University and is currently training to become and LSLS certified auditory verbal educator. Stephanie has worked as an itinerant teacher and is currently in the classroom setting. In addition, she also serves as a co-president of the North Carolina Cued Speech Association.</p>

AV Ed.</strong> has been teaching children with hearing loss since 1993, with a slight hiatus to have children of her own.  She has been an itinerant and a classroom teacher through the years.  Sherri has worked with children and families in Auditory Verbal, Auditory-Oral, and Cued Speech approaches.  She received her Master's degree from the John Tracy Clinic/University of San Diego Program and is an LSLS Certified Auditory-Verbal Educator.  Sherri is currently a Consulting Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Exceptional Children's Division of the Dept. of Public Instruction.</p>
