Medical University of South Carolina

Hobbies/Interests:
Any activity outside in beautiful NC weather, cooking, college football, exploring NC beaches, trivia, DIY projects, playing with my dog Howard, and Tuesday night fun with my fellow interns!

Why I chose UNC:
I did an away rotation at UNC as a student and fell in love with the people and the program. The residents are truly happy and have created a family environment that is easy to feel at home in. That coupled with receptive leaders focused on continuing the enrichment of both the residents and the program absolutely sold me. I truly think this program is one of the best in the country. It is rare to find such a well balanced mixture of academic, urban, and community medicine. And there is no doubt that the triangle is a wonderful place to live!

Why I chose UNC:
1. The people: Dr. Biese and the leadership are amazing.
2. The quality of the program: It includes everything--training, curriculum, residents, reputation...
3. WakeMed!
4. Lifestyle

Hobbies/Interests:
In my free time I enjoy riding my bicycle, running, kayaking, reading the Economist, blogging and all manner of cooking. I'm an avid marathoner and hope to compete in my first ironman at the end of intern year. I love to travel and have worked abroad in Tanzania, Mexico, and Guatemala. I live with my girlfriend, Olivia, and my dog, the mighty goldador Ulysses.

Why I chose UNC:
That's easy. The people here are awesome. As a resident, I spend lots of time with my classmates. It's a pleasure to work with these folks, and that makes coming to the hospital fun, even with the long hours. The program administration really cares about resident well-being and our development, both personally and professionally. The ultrasound program here is top notch, and there's no better program in the country for international emergency medicine.

Hobbies/Interests:
Being a Nebraskan, there is only one interest that matters: Nebraska Cornhusker football. However, in my free time that is not dedicated to watching football, I enjoy reading, hanging out with my husband and having date nights, traveling, camping, and playing with our boxer, Penny.

Why I chose UNC:
When you come to UNC you'll meet the residents and the attendings, and that's enough to sell you on the program. Beyond that, we have a unique program in that we get exposure to emergency medicine in both public and private hospitals. Our training at UNC and WakeMed is unparalleled with high volume and high acuity, lots of procedures and phenomenal teaching. Further, off service rotations are structured to enhance our residency education, not send us to other services for scut work. I couldn't be happier with my decision to come here for residency.

I graduated from UCLA in 2002; then Duke Med in 2006. I like backpacking, travel, rock climbing, the outdoors, gardening, cooking, and reading excessively.

Why I chose UNC:
I chose UNC because it paired congenial residents with outstanding faculty, great off-service training, and a beautiful & affordable location with easy access to the great outdoors.

Hobbies/Interests:
Hobbies - travel; learning new languages; reading; writing; scrapbooking (when time allows); kickboxing

Interests - global health; health policy; community health and underserved care

Why I chose UNC:
The opportunity to pursue whatever area of interest one desires regarding professional interests or goals was really a catch! The intersection of a strong background in global health; public health and a program with a strong clinical background including a team of world-renowned faculty did it for me.

Hobbies/Interests:
Hobbies - Cooking and eating good food, hanging out with my dogs and two new kittens, reading for fun, following politics, watching Twins baseball (and getting to know the Durham Bulls) and Vikings football, playing tennis.

Interests - Research, Health Policy and Economics, Access to Care, Health Related Behavior, Provider Incentives

Why I chose UNC:
I am from Minnesota and my primary goal in residency was to escape the cold! I came down to interview at UNC and fell in love with the area, the people, and the program. There is a great mix of academic and community emergency medicine which means residents get all the procedures we can handle alongside wonderful opportunities for cutting-edge research in everything from basic science to epidemiology to behavior. I love living in Durham and being able to explore Chapel Hill and Raleigh, as well as the beautiful parks in the surrounding area. The residents and attendings at UNC and WakeMed are simultaneously warm, fun and really smart - I feel so lucky to be part of the program!

Hobbies/Interests:
Skiing, off-roading, competitive kickball, auto mechanics, philosophizing, head-banging, and bar trivia.

Why I chose UNC:
The EM residency at UNC stood out for me because the training is split between the academic environment at UNC and the community/county environment at Wake; I knew that upon my graduation in 3 years my experience in both settings would make me a more versatile EM physician. Living in the research triangle area is great because outside of work there are lots of smart, motivated young professionals to interact with. I must also mention the leadership here is exceptional--to the point where I look forward to conference even if I'm post night-shift. Weird, right? I would have thought so too.

Hobbies/Interests:
Climbing, mountain biking, soccer, roasting coffee, and hanging out with my wife. Lately, my biggest hobby has been physical therapy for an ACL reconstruction. They say I'll be able to walk down stairs with either leg soon, I can't wait.

Why I chose UNC:
I've been in this area for 10 years and was looking to train in a different part of the country. I looked all over the country and at the end of the day was still sold on Carolina. The benefit of training at two completely different ED practices (UNC and WakeMed - a busy community ED) was a major selling point. However, my main reason for staying was knowing that the residents here were the happiest residents I came across during my 4th year and being completely sold on Dr. Biese as an advocate and mentor.

Hobbies/Interests:
Spending time with my kids (which means going to museums and parks, or just running in circles round the house)! Other interests, though sometimes mutually exclusive with the first, include travelling, ballroom dancing, reading, scrapbooking, and hanging out with friends.

Why I chose UNC:
Two main reasons, the strength of the academic program, and the amazing residents and faculty here. It is a very supportive and friendly environment. Also Durham/Chapel Hill is a fantastic place to live. Housing is affordable compared to the Northeast, where I was moving from. The weather is great, and there are lots of things to do in the area.
