Since 1986, UNC Air Care has
served the state of North Carolina providing 24 hour response by
air and ground for patients of all ages and medical emergencies.
Emergency transport of critically ill or injured patients is provided
from hospital to hospital or trauma center. The program utilizes
2 helicopters and 6 ambulances located in Chapel Hill with 3 satellite
bases in Erwin, Henderson, and Raleigh. |
UNC Hospitals is a Level 1 Trauma Center, specializing
in adult, pediatric and newborn intensive care, high-risk obstetrics,
and organ transplant. We are also the home of the North Carolina
Jaycee Burn Center.

The medical crew consists of
two specialized teams. The adult team has a registered nurse and
a paramedic while the pediatric/neonatal team consists of a registered
nurse and a respiratory therapist. Both teams are extensively trained
and highly skilled in advanced procedures. UNC Air Care combines
the teams to accommodate the needs of the patient, and selects the
mode of transportation that will provide the safest and fastest
transport possible. |
| The pilots and mechanics have all been trained in air medical
operations and maintenance. The ground operators are all EMT
certified. All communicators completed the NAACS training course.
County communication centers and hospital medical personnel can
call 1-800-247-6264 to arrange transports.
