Rochelle Chijioke (PGY3) is volunteering as an alcohol educator for a group in Chapel Hill called Carpe Diem. Carpe Diem is a program specifically designed for college students who have been charged by law enforcement with an alcohol violation and offered a first offender's deferred prosecution by the District Attorney's Office. They work primarily with UNC students educating on the medical effects of alcohol. Dr. Nikki Waller was the first UNC EM resident to participate in the program and residents have been passing down the responsibility ever since.

Johnson Sirleaf receives this year’s Nobel Prize

The Department of Emergency Medicine is honored to congratulate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, this year’s Nobel Prize winner for her contributions to securing peace in Liberia, to promoting economic and social development and to strengthening the position of women. Liberia’s first and only female president also secured re- election on November 10th. President Sirleaf’s son, Dr. James Sirleaf, was an invited speaker for EM Residency Conference on May 18th, giving a talk on sickle cell disease. Dr. Sirleaf practices Emergency Medicine at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut and is a Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. He is also the founder of the non-profit HEARTT (Health Education Relief Through Teaching). He is a longtime friend of Ed Jackem.

Lisa Merck (EM residency graduate 2008) and her husband Derek have just accepted faculty positions at Brown University. Lisa will be a neurosciences researcher and EM clinician in the Dept of EM with Brian Zink. After graduating from our program, Dr. Merck got a faculty position at Emory and received several grants. Our faculty who worked with Lisa share a pride in her achievements.
