We are pleased to announce that the construction of a new multidisciplinary surgical skills has been completed. The new facility has been named in honor of the main sponsor, the North Carolina Eye Bank, and has been established as a collaboration between the departments of Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.
The wet lab features 16 workspaces allowing open, endoscopic, and microscopic work with both cadaveric specimens and artificial models. Each station has a high definition video system for both endoscopic and microscopic applications, suction, low pressure irrigation, pressured air, and a state of the art down draft ventilation system. Additionally, the lab has three full body operating tables permitting the simulation of various surgical procedures requiring larger specimens.
The lab suite also features a simulator lab allowing practice of robotic procedures. The adjacent conference room allows direct high definition broadcasting. The space also features a dedicated histology lab using various techniques including equipment that allows sectioning of non-decalcified specimens.
The departments plan on utilizing the space for weekly resident training sessions as well as for educational purposes like national and international courses.
