UNC Voice Center Team

Robert A. Buckmire, MD, is the Director of the University of North Carolina Voice Center and the Chief of the Division of Voice and Swallowing Disorders. He completed a post-graduate fellowship in Laryngology and Care of the Professional Voice at the Vanderbilt University Voice Center in Nashville TN. in 2000. Since that time, Dr. Buckmire has delivered more the 50 local regional, national and international presentations on vocal health, voice disorders and new techniques in laryngeal surgery. He has recently joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina to start a Division of Voice and Swallowing Disorders in the Department of Otolaryngology/ Head and Neck Surgery.

Mark C. Weissler, MD, FACS, J.P. Riddle Distinguished Professor of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, is Chief of the Division of Head & Neck Oncology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He completed a residency in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, Harvard University, in 1985, and a fellowship in Head & Neck Oncology at the University of Cincinnati in 1986. Along with Dr. Ellen Markus, he is a founding member of the UNC Voice Wellness Clinic and has been active in the practice of laryngology since 1986. His special interests in laryngology are in the treatment of laryngeal dystonia, vocal cord paralysis, laser surgery, treatment of benign and malignant laryngeal neoplasms (tumors), and the treatment of laryngeal and tracheal stenosis.

Ellen Markus, MA, CCC-SLP, DMA, Voice Center Coordinator, is a speech pathologist and singing voice specialist who is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of voice disorders. She has a doctorate in vocal music performance and has taught singing for over 25 years. In 1991, she co-founded the UNC Voice Wellness Clinic, where she specializes in working with singers who have experienced vocal injury. She has lectured regionally and at the national level on the care and prevention of voice disorders.

Linda F. Hube, MS, CCC-SLP, is speech pathologist with special training in voice and swallowing and has a background in theatre and vocal music. She has been with UNC HealthCare since 1998 where she has worked extensively with patients who have voice and swallowing dysfunction. She also has a special interest in the behavioral approach to the treatment of Spasmodic Dysphonia and has lectured on the topic at both regional and world symposia.
