Each year coinciding with Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, the Department of UNC Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery offer a free throat cancer screenings, smoking cessation counselling as well as other resources regarding throat cancer.

The screening event helps to identify patients with previously undetected cancers, especially those patients without access to health care or insurance. In addition, the event offers education about the causes of throat cancer, such as smoking and tobacco use, as well as alcohol abuse.

Symptoms of throat cancer include trouble swallowing food, mouth soreness, persistent hoarseness and weight loss. If you exhibit any of the above symptoms of throat cancer, you should be screened. The free cancer screening exams take about 15 minutes.
