"Preparation for managed care" means different
things to different people, from learning how to conform to a structured
practice environment in a specific managed care organizaiton to
acquiring knowledge of abstract principles of health care finance
to learning the clinical management of a patient population. We
are most concerned here with describing preparation fo the day-to-day
clinical life of practitioners as they manage the care of their
patiens, who may be enrolled in a wide variety of health care plans.
As Berwick has pointed out, "only those who provide care can
in the end change care" (1994, p.797).
