Asheville Family Medicine

The MAHEC Family Practice Residency Program in Asheville, North Carolina, is an 8-8-8 program administered by the Mountain Area Health Education Center, affiliated with Mission Hospitals and with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. The mission of the residency program is to train and support primary care providers who will improve the access to, and quality of, health care for underserved populations in western North Carolina. Some educational innovations are Problem Based Learning, Didactic half day in weekly schedule, palm computers; “Stumpers” game; Electronic Medical Record, and a Behavior Medicine integrated approach. MAHEC Hendersonville Residency Program was established as a “Rural Residency Track” in 1996 and is based at the Hendersonville Family Health Center, a freestanding new medical office building and at the Margaret R. Pardee Hospital next door. From 1999 – 2004, Asheville has taught 137 Family Medicine Clerkship students, placing students at eighteen sites across western North Carolina.
