ACA Enrollment Is Open. Get Covered, Carolina!
Starting November 15, 2014, you can enroll in an affordable health plan that works for you. The Health Insurance Marketplace helps uninsured people get health coverage. You can compare health insurance plans and then select a plan during annual open enrollment which is November 15, 2014 - February 15, 2015. UNC Family Medicine will be offering free appointments again this year for our patients who are interested in meeting with a certified application counselor who has been trained to help people in understanding the marketplace.

The National Institutes of Health recently awarded researchers from the UNC School of Medicine and the UNC Gillings School of Public Health more than $2 million to study the effects of physical activity food labeling on consumer food choices and exercise.
UNC Family Medicine to Create Model Health Care Practice
UNC Family Medicine is creating the nation's leading family medicine practice. In November, that dream will become reality as we begin construction on the renovation of the UNC Family Medicine Center. After more than a year of planning, the design is final. We will soon begin work on the first phase of the project which includes the parking lot and the sports medicine/procedural suite.
UNC Family Medicine Center Offers Saturday Morning Sports Injury Clinic
Beginning August 23, the UNC Family Medicine Center will offer a fall walk-in sports injury clinic for local high school and college athletes as well as weekend warriors. The walk-in clinic is on Saturday mornings from 8:00am – 10:00am. All services are provided by Board-Certified Sports Medicine Specialists and include everything from xray and ultrasound to casting and concussion care.
Epic has arrived at UNC Family Medicine!
On April 4, we transitioned to Epic@UNC, a new electronic medical record that has many benefits for our patients. Epic@UNC provides “one patient ID, one problem list, one medication list, and one bill” for each patient across the UNC Health Care system. For example, My UNC Chart allows you to see your own personal health record, get your lab results, communicate with your doctor, and even directly schedule your own appointments.
Gwyther Receives Prestigious Addiction Medicine Award
The 2014 Dr. Frederick B. Glaser Award was presented to Dr. Bob Gwyther, a pioneer and leader in the field of addiction medicine. Dr. Bob Gwyther is a Professor of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina. He has provided primary care and counsel to countless patients. In addition, he has taught thousands of young doctors how to care for patients and their families with substance abuse related disorders.
Dr. Adam Goldstein comments on CVS's decision to eliminate tobacco sales
"UNC's Nicotine Dependence Program says "kudos" to CVS's decision to eliminate tobacco sales in their stores. Time for Walgreen, Rite Aid, and all pharmacies to copy 'Health over Profits', said Adam Goldstein, MD MPH, when asked his opinion about CVS's decision to eliminate tobacco sales in all of their stores nationwide.
