Group Prenatal Care

Having a baby is one of life's most anticipated moments.
At UNC Family Medicine Center, we recognize that your pregnancy and birth are a time of discovery and of learning that can be shared with other families in your community.

Group Prenatal Care

UNC Family Medicine Center believes families have a lot to teach each other. With that in mind, we support Group Prenatal Care, an innovative way to provide community and compassionate care in a clinical setting.

Join four to eight other pregnant mothers and their partners for camaraderie, community, and excellent clinical care. Sessions are led by a doctor/nurse or midwife/nurse team and will include at least one of the three doctors who will be present at your birth! Sessions consist of an individual prenatal clinical exam with the midwife or doctor followed by lively group discussion. Specialists from the community are invited to speak to some groups. You will also tour UNC Women's Hospital together with your group leaders.

Group sessions typically last for 90 minutes and--after an individual prenatal exam performed by the clinician--you can expect to cover a wide range of topics in your group discussion, from back-pain and sleeping issues to healthy pregnancy nutrition to your plans for post-partum and pediatric care. At the 16-20 week mark of your pregnancy, we contact you to invite you to participate in group prenatal care. Then the sessions are scheduled on a consistent day and time, so you will know exactly when your appointments will be throughout your pregnancy. What could be easier?
