Breastfeeding Spoken Here!
Studies show that breastfeeding is best for babies and we here at UNC Family Medicine are dedicated to helping you with all your breastfeeding needs, whether it is simply information about which pump is best for your family or whether you and your child need extensive breastfeeding support.

At UNC Family Medicine Center, we recommend that all babies breastfeed exclusively until they are at least six months old but we encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies for as long as they feel comfortable doing so. We base our recommendation on studies that tell us that babies who breastfeed are less prone to gastrointestinal upsets (like gas or diarrhea), they are at lower risk for many chronic conditions (such as asthma, allergies, and colic), they are at lower risk for developing more serious conditions (such as SIDS or childhood obesity), and they tend to have higher IQs and an increased cognitive response. But the benefits of breastfeeding do not just apply to the child! Breastfeeding can help women lose their post-pregnancy weight faster, can assist in the bonding of mother and child, and it can lower the risk of breast cancer! It's also inexpensive and convenient!
Our Lactation Consultant has a Tuesday morning Lactation Clinic at the Women's Birth and Wellness Center in Chapel Hill but she can also arrange appointments outside the Lactation Clinic and will sometimes make house calls as well (depending on her schedule and your location). She is committed to assisting you and your child experience the many benefits of breastfeeding and can help with a variety of special needs--from latch issues and milk production issues to how best to juggle breastfeeding and returning to work.
Breastfeeding is the natural choice!
