Why support Family Medicine?

 America's primary healthcare system is not well - as a result, neither are many Americans.
The UNC Department of Family Medicine is leading the way to heal the healthcare system through:

Nationally recognized and relevant research 
Chronic diseases, access to care, geriatrics, tobacco use prevention, rural health, hypertension and much more.

Exceptional medical education
Family Medicine Faculty are leaders and involved in the training of medical students, Family Medicine residents, Research Fellows and the Faculty Development Fellows.

Innovative, holistic and compassionate clinical practice
Creating, testing and disseminating new practice models that improve patient care and health outcomes while lowering the costs for patients and providers.

Community service
The UNC Department of Family Medicine supports community service projects to address unment health needs. Examples include:
     Here's to Your Health - a public service radio show providing the
     latest health information
     Reach Out and Read - a project to provide free books to children
     during well-child visits while using the books to assess their
     cognitive abilities and educate parents on the importance of
     reading to children
     SHAC - faculty volunteer and mentor at the free health clinic
     for those in our community without any health insurance
