UNC Family Medicine Partners with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the Triangle on Healthy Child Initiative

On Saturday, September 19, 2015 a team from UNC Family Medicine worked alongside staff and volunteers from Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Triangle to provide an array of health related services to children, mentors, and families who attended the annual back to school picnic.

More than 175 people from the local area were registered for the event, and each registrant was invited to complete a five question survey about their health. Questions were crafted to learn more about the individual’s access to primary care services, exercise, nutrition, and tobacco use. In addition, biometric screening in the form of BMI and blood pressure were offered, and participants received educational materials on healthy eating, exercise, and/or tobacco cessation.   Data from the event will be analyzed to help develop next steps for the Healthy Child Initiative. UNC Family Medicine provided input on the questionnaire, suggestions on tracking the data, and pediatric blood pressure cuffs! Thanks to everyone who helped make this day a success! Thanks to Liska Lackey, Shavonda Thomas, Barbara Silver, Barbara’s intern Nikki, Kevin Tate, Caroline Mullin, Todd Meath, Keyona Oni, and Smokey Hay.
