UNC study shows link between spanking and physical abuse
Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Parents who use more than bare hands in spanking their children are far more likely to beat, kick, or burn them as well, researchers here said. Mothers who said in a telephone survey that they or a domestic partner spanked their children were 2.7 times as likely (95% CI 1.2 to 6.3) to report more overtly abusive behaviors, relative to non-spanking parents, reported Adam J. Zolotor, M.D., M.P.H., of the University of North Carolina, and colleagues, online in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
