Dr. Newton serves as the Vice Dean & Director of NC Area Health Education Center and the William B. Aycock Distinguished Professor and Chair at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Newton’s major interest is the organization and effectiveness of healthcare. He has over 140 articles and book chapters, and has obtained over $40,000,000 of external grants. Dr. Newton is a founder of the I3 Collaborative, with 10 years of care transformation experience in Family Medicine, Pediatrics and Internal Medicine residencies, and NC IPIP/REC, with engagement of over 1100 practices. Past Chair of the American Board of Family Medicine, he chairs the ABMS Committee on Continuing Certification. He is a member of the IOM Global Forum in Innovations in Health Professional Education, and has been appointed to the Liaison Committee of Medical Education. He is married to Anna Kucharska-Newton and they have two children.
