Biographical Information
Erin P. Fraher, PhD, MPP is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as Deputy Director for Policy and Director of the Program on Health Workforce Research & Policy at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Dr. Fraher’s research on the training, regulation and payment of the nation’s health workforce has been used by state and federal policy makers in their efforts to address workforce shortages, particularly in rural and underserved communities. She is often called upon to brief White House, Congressional and Senate staff and members, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, state governors, state legislatures, health systems and other public and private sector leaders on a wide range of emerging health workforce topics. She has served as an expert advisor to the National Academy of Medicine in multiple roles, serving on the planning committee, as a workshop co-chair, as a speaker on various workforce topics and as a reviewer of a NAM report. Dr. Fraher is the immediate past Chair of the Council on Graduate Medical Education (COGME) which is charged with advising the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Congress on workforce trends, training issues and financing.
Areas of Interest
Dr. Fraher’s research focuses on graduate medical education, interprofessional teams in new models of care, developing rigorous methodologies to project how many health workers will be needed under different possible “futures,” and using life course theory to better understand health professionals’ career trajectories.

Family Medicine researchers funded to study shift to value-based care
