Biographical Information

Dr. Asher is Director of Integrative Medicine Services at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at UNC Chatham Hospital.  He has been a practitioner, teacher, and researcher in the field of Integrative Medicine for over 20 years.  He earned his medical degree at the Columbia University-Ben Gurion University Medical School for International Health, completed residency training in Family Medicine at MAHEC in Western North Carolina, and completed both a Master’s in Public Health and a clinical research fellowship at UNC.  When not at work, he can be found playing with his four children anywhere in North Carolina from the mountains to the sea.

Areas of Interest

Dr. Asher’s research focuses on the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for chronic conditions such as hypertension and cancer, with a primary focus on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of botanical agents. Has been involved in several acupuncture studies, as well as systematic reviews of acupuncture for pain and non-pharmacologic treatments for depression. He is currently leading clinical and translational trials of curcumin for prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer.
