Data-Saving and Transfer

All Facility computers are networked to the flow cytometry server: \\locust.med.unc.edu\vol2\Microbiology\Groups – Flow Facility/youronyen.

This permits us to centralize all data storage. Listmode data files from all cytometer stations can be sent to the server. Reminder: No data is to be placed on the local computer hard drives (you may place it there temporarily but must delete it before leaving). The server hard drive will be backed up nightly (except Sat. and Sun).  Note however, that you are responsible for your data and you should download a copy to your lab/office computer hard drive or to a CD/DVD. You should make a second copy to work from to avoid data loss. As a rule when  working with listmode files, make a copy to the hard drive; work with them using the hard drive copy (not only makes it safer but also is faster); then delete them from the hard drive when finished. Note: Summit cannot work with data from a CD/DVD - you must copy it to your hard drive to work with it. We strongly urge you to also make backups of your Summit databases and FlowJo CE protocols. Remember your flow cytometry data files are as important as your lab notebook, gels, films, etc. and you should afford them the same protection.

Log into all cytometers with your ONYEN.  Former Flow Data files have been moved to your new folder with your ONYEN name.

If you are in Microbiology & Immunology, you can access the drive  J:\\Flow Facility\\youronyen   Be sure to remove previously networked drives that are no longer functional.

If you are not in Microbiology & Immunology, you will need to map your drive to the new folder:

On Windows/PC computers: Under My Computer on the desktop, go to the Tools tab and select 'Map Network Drive'.  In Windows 7, you can go directly to 'Map Network Drive'. A dialog window will open with a choice to select an available drive (we suggest 'J' if it is available). In the Folder box, type: \\locust.med.unc.edu\vol2\Microbiology\Groups Select 'Finish'.  When you open the drive, you will see a number of folders, select 'Flow Facility' and then select the folder that has your ONYEN label.  You will be asked to log in via your ONYEN and password.

Name: AD\onyen (that is YOUR onyen)

Password:***********

On Mac computers including Apple Lion Operating Systems: the Office of Information Systems recommends all Mac users re-map the Microbiology network locations as shown below to avoid future issues:

  • Mapping the network shortcuts: To recreate the shortcut to the Microbiology file server, go to your Desktop.  On the menu at the top of the screen, select: Go -  Connect to Server. A new window appears.
  • First, remove any existing mapping to the Microbiology server “locust”.
  • Then, in the address field of the Connect to Server box, enter the following address and click the “+” button.
  • smb://locust.med.unc.edu/Microbiology/Groups
  • Clicking the “+” button saves the location to the list below. Now repeat the process for the following locations:
  • smb://locust.med.unc.edu/Microbiology/Users
  • smb://locust.med.unc.edu/Microbiology/Shared
  • Click Connect to connect to the file share.
  • You will be prompted for a password. For the username, enter your Onyen username and password in the following format:  Username: AD\onyen
  • Password: <current Onyen password>
  • With the successful username/password combination, you will connect to the file share.
  • Further information The “Users” location contains your home directory. It is the same name as your Onyen username. Your folder within this network location is accessible only to you; no one else can access the data placed in this folder. Data that you want to store on the server (but do not wish to share with anyone) can be saved here.
  • The “Groups” location contains your group/lab shared data. Within this location is a group folder with the name of your lab or division. All members of your group have the ability to read, write and delete files to that folder. This allows you to collaborate and share data with one another.
  • Finally, the “Shared” location is a share that is accessible to the entire Microbiology department. Anything placed in this “Shared” location can be viewed by the entire department.

All users:

The Calendar function will continue to use your Flow Cytometry assigned username and password.
