Studying for the NBME shelf exam [back to top]

Students preparing for the NBME shelf exams have found the  AAFP practice questions. You have to become an American Academy of Family Physician (AAFP) member to view questions but membership is free for students and is granted within 1-2 days.

Students have also found the NMS and Pretest series helpful and representative of the level of difficulty of the actual exam questions. Case Files is another resource but students have felt the sample questions are too easy.

While these resources may be helpful to prepare for the exam, we feel the core content of the course is best learned using the Essentials of Family Medicine text. This evidence based text is very up to date for a text book and will give you a solid foundation in family medicine.
