Core Curriculum Conference

Weekly:  Tuesdays, 4:30pm-5:30pm
Location:  Old Clinic Building (or Virtual)

    • Goal: to present GI-related topics covering all of the major areas of GI and Hepatology over a 3-year cycle for clinical fellows. This constitutes our core lecture and curriculum series and helps prepare our fellows to sit for boards.
    • Enables fellows to:
      • Explain pathophysiology as it relates to the particular organ system/disease process in gastroenterology
      • Describe the clinical correlation of the organ system/disease process
      • Other sessions not relating specifically to AGA core curriculum topics include: GI coding, billing and compliance, Olympus in-service demonstrations and training, UNC Meaningful Use Initiative, and the Joint Commission on GI Core Measures

New Fellow Orientation Series

    • For the first 8-9 weeks of each new academic year, we present relevant topics in a “Back to Basics” series for our new fellows, including: moderate sedation, esophageal motility testing, anorectal manometry, foreign body retrieval, radiology of the GI tract, endoscopy and mucosal sampling, management of upper and lower GI bleeds, and capsule endoscopy.

Wednesday Morning Conference

Weekly:  Wednesdays from 7:30am-8:30am
Location:  Marsico 5004 (or Virtual)

Clinical Case Conference (CCC)

    • Goal: This conference provides the opportunity to review interesting and challenging cases seen recently on our consult service or in clinic with care providers within the GI division, as well as outside physicians.
    • Format: One faculty member and one fellow are assigned to bring a 25-minute clinical case for presentation.
    • Objectives:
      • Delineate the principles of gastroenterology and hepatology as illustrated by that week’s most instructive patients seen in UNC-Hospitals and clinics;
      • Describe the changing methods and therapies applied in the UNC setting;
      • Develop a habit of critical thinking through active discussion between trainees and faculty colleagues;
      • Provide feedback to individual practices and groups.

GI Grand Rounds

    • Format: A key faculty member presents an in-depth talk on cutting-edge therapeutic advancements in the various sub-specialties within our field. Each month covers a major area of GI health care, from novel therapies for IBD and HCV, to updates in continued quality improvement.

      Journal Club

    • Goal: To foster a sense of critical awareness in the literature towards sound medical decision-making.
    • Format: Links to the week’s articles will be sent to attendees prior to the session. One attending and one fellow each present two articles – one as a summary review, and the other for in-depth discussion.

Morbidity and Mortality (M & M) Conference

    • Goal: To discuss complications related to procedures performed in our endoscopy suite

Dr. Shaheen Lunches

Monthly:  (Typically) the second Wednesday of each month, 12pm-1pm
Location:  Virtual

    • Each month, Dr. Shaheen hosts a closed lunch meeting with the GI fellows. Announcements are made via email.

Medicine Grand Rounds

Monthly:  Thursdays, 12pm-1pm
Location:  4008 Old Clinic, (or attend via WebEx)

IBD Journal Club

Bi-monthly:  Last Monday of every other month, 5pm
Location:  Bioinformatics 4137

    • Consists of in-depth group reviews of two important articles in the area of IBD. Fellows are welcome to attend but do not need to present papers, which is done by our IBD faculty members who select articles considered to be of relevance for clinical decision-making in IBD. Up to four papers are reviewed, with presentation of 5-10 minutes per paper.

Research Seminar Series

Weekly: Thursdays from 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. (August through May)
Location:  2004 Marsico

Tumor Board Conference

Weekly: Mondays at 7:30am
Location: Sanofi Conference room (Cancer hospital, ground floor, CG222)

    • Purpose: to discuss pathology and radiologic results of patients with GI tumors.

 

Liver Conferences

The transplant hepatology fellow is expected to attend all of the following conferences. The liver fellow is expected to attend the conferences marked with an asterisk (*).

Transplant Hepatology Clinical Case Conference

Weekly: Tuesdays from 7:15am-8am
Location: 4002 Burnett-Womack Building

    • The transplant hepatology fellow presents a brief case for presentation and discussion. A hepatology faculty member will also present a brief didactic session covering topics involving hepatology and liver transplant.
    • The last Tuesday of the month is substituted for Hepatology Journal Club where each hepatology faculty and transplant hepatology fellow bring articles to discuss from the major hepatology journals. Other gastroenterology fellows are welcome to attend.

Hepatobiliary Conference*

Biweekly: The first and third Wednesdays of each month from 12:30pm-1:30pm
Location: Aventis Conference Room (Cancer Hospital, first floor)

Liver Histopathology Conference* (given by the Department of Pathology)

Bimonthly:  The second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 1:30pm-2pm
Location:  Surgical Pathology suite on the third floor (30149) of the Women’s Hospital (room 30208)

Transplant Selection Committee*

Weekly:  Wednesdays from 2pm-3pm
Location: Transplant Clinic Conference Room on the 4th floor of UNC Hospital (Anderson Wing)
