Research Interests

Nicholas Shaheen is Associate Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and School of Public Health and Director for the Center for Esophageal Diseases and Swallowing at the University of North Carolina.

His research interest is in the epidemiology and management of esophageal diseases. He is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters related to reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, and esophageal cancer. He is currently on the editorial board of Gastroenterology, Evidence-Based Gastroenterology, and Clinical and Translational Science. He is a reviewer for numerous journals, including Gut, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, American Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and American Journal of Gastroenterology. Dr. Shaheen receives research funding from the National Institutes of Health and multiple private foundations and corporations to pursue clinical and translational research in esophageal diseases.

Dr. Shaheen is the President of the North Carolina Society of Gastroenterology, and is the Vice-Chair of the Clinical Practice section of the AGA. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the AGA.
