Ademola O. Aderoju, MD

Dr. Aderoju is a graduate of Belmont University in Nashville, TN. He did graduate work at Tennessee State University before attending medical school at Meharry Medical College.  He completed internal medicine residency at UNC.  Dr. Aderoju is interested in the area of functional bowel disorders, with a focus on racial, cross-cultural, and international disparities.  He is married and has two boys and one girl.  He is an avid squash player and also enjoys tennis, soccer, chess, and scrabble.

William J. Bulsiewicz, MD, MSc

Dr. Bulsiewicz received his medical degree from Georgetown University and completed internal medicine training at Northwestern University, where he served as Chief Medical Resident and also completed a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation.  Will  is in our clinical epidemiology research track with plans to study esophageal cancer prevention and has taken advanced courses in our School of Public Health.

Melissa R. Kang, MD, MSc

Dr. Kang was born in South Korea and emigrated to the U.S. at age 11.  She grew up in Long Island, NY, and went to Dartmouth College for undergraduate education.  She attended Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science for medical school and did her internal medicine residency at Boston Medical Center.  She is interested in all aspects of GI and is currently working in the lab of Dr. Tope Keku.  She loves running and snowboarding, listening to live music, and discovering new restaurants.

Patricia D. Jones, MD

Dr. Jones was raised in New Jersey and completed her undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins University.  She then attended Albany Medical College for medical school.  She completed her residency in internal medicine/pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She has an interest in transitional care, specifically in liver transplant patients.  She is married to Valentine and has three children.  She enjoys crafting and creating natural hair products.

Jeffrey B. King, MD

Dr. King graduated from Duke University with a B.S. in biology and economics.  After two years of colon cancer clinical research at the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University Medical Center, he returned to his home state for medical school at the University of Massachusetts.  He went on to complete his internal medicine residency and chief residency at Boston Medical Center.  Following residency, Dr. King spent nearly one year working in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as an instructor of medical English and medical interviewing for students affiliated with the University of Buenos Aires Medical School.  Dr. King is a fellow in our physician-scientist pathway and is investigating the role of cancer stem cells and their cell-surface markers in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer.  He lives in Chapel Hill with his wife Elizabeth, a visiting professor at the Wake Forest School of Law, and their two sons.

Christopher E. McGowan, MD

Dr. McGowan grew up in Glen Gardner, NJ.  He received his undergraduate education at Penn State University, where he was enrolled in a 6-year accelerated medical program in conjunction with Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.  He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident.  Chris is in the clinical epidemiology track and will be earning his Masters of Science in Clinical Research at the UNC Gillings School of Public Health.  He lives in Chapel Hill with his wife, Grace, a hematology/oncology fellow at Duke.

Marcus Muehlbauer, MD, PhD

Dr. Marcus Muehlbauer (Mühlbauer - for publications) is a graduate of the University of Regensburg in Germany, where he also obtained his PhD.  Before entering the internal medicine residency program at UNC, he worked in the lab of Dr. Christian Jobin as a post-doctoral fellow focusing on the role of NF-kB in mucosal immunity and the host-microbial interaction in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He is a fellow in our physician-scientist pathway and would like to build his own independent research laboratory focusing on the role of host-microbial interactions in the development of IBD and GI cancers.  His research fellowship is being funded by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA).  He is married to Alina, an office manager at VACO in Raleigh.  In his scarce spare time he manages to outperform the stock market with his successful trading blog.

Joseph C. Onyiah, MD

Dr. Onyiah is a graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY., and  subsequently completed medical school and internal medicine residency at Duke University. He is enrolled in our basic science research track with a focus on innate immunology and host-pathogen interactions of the gut, with the aim of improving our knowledge of the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Eric S. Orman, MD

Dr. Orman was born and raised in Baltimore, MD.  He did his undergraduate work at the University of Virginia and completed medical school at Duke University.  Following that, he went to the University of Michigan, where he did his internal medicine residency.  Dr. Orman has taken courses in our Gillings School of Public Health towards obtaining a Master's of Science degree in Clinical Research (MSCR).  Currently he is matriculating in our transplant hepatology program, with the aim of becoming an academic hepatologist.  He and his wife, Jennifer, live with their son, Hank, twins, and their two dogs in Durham.

Anne F. Peery, MD, MSCR

Dr. Peery graduated from the College of Charleston with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and obtained a Master’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Virginia.  She completed medical school and internal medicine residency here at UNC and spent her first two years of GI fellowship taking courses in our Gillings School of Public Health, culminating in a Master's of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) degree.  She lives in Durham with her husband Andrew, a pediatric anesthesia fellow, and their son.

Kunwardeep S. Sohal, MD

Dr. Sohal was born in Houston, TX.  His family moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL, when he was 8 years old.  He graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in History, and continues to be a very rabid Gators fan.  Dr. Sohal then moved to Baltimore to complete medical school at the University of Maryland, and selected UNC as his choice for internal medicine residency.  During his intern year at UNC, he married his wife, Tara, and together they decided to start a family and now have a son, Arjan.  Besides sports (anything and everything involving the Gators), Dr. Sohal enjoys food, movies and traveling.
