About the UNC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Mission Statement

The mission of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is to advance the science, education and practice of gastroenterology. To achieve that mission, the Division has the following core commitments:
 

  • The Division is committed to expanding the science of gastroenterology to better understand the causes, prevention, treatment and cure of digestive and liver diseases.
  • The Division is committed to providing excellent care to patients.
  • The Division is committed to training the next generation of clinicians and scientists who will advance the field in basic research, clinical research and patient care.


The Physicians who are members of the Division are recognized nationally and internationally as leaders in their respective fields. The Division has centers of excellence in Functional GI and Motility Disorders, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Esophageal Diseases and Swallowing, Liver Disease and Transplant, and Pancreatobiliary diseases.

Clinical Care

The Division offers a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic GI procedures including colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, manometry, liver biopsy, and capsule endoscopy. Utilizing a state-of-the-art equipment, we perform over 11,000 procedures yearly for the diagnosis and management of common and complex GI disorders in our hospital facilities and Outpatient Endoscopy Clinic.
