Hans Herfarth was recruited to the faculty of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology from the First Department of Internal Medicine of the University in Regensburg, Germany in May 2006. He is a member of the UNC Multidisciplinary Center for IBD Research and Treatment and the author for the UNC Patient Guide to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Since 2007 he is the organizer of the IBD Patient Education Day at UNC and the CME Update in IBD.

Dr. Herfarth’s main research interests comprise the investigation of novel diagnostic approaches in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and the evaluation of therapeutic approaches in IBD. He is currently conducting several investigator initiated clinical studies in IBD, which are funded by the NIH, the CCFA and private as well as industry associated foundations. He is also principal investigator in several industry sponsored IBD studies and a core director of animal imaging facility at the Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Diseases (CGIBD) at UNC. Dr. Herfarth is the author of numerous journal articles, book chapters and reviews related to IBD. He is currently on the editorial board of Gut, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, BMC Gastroenterology and BMC Research Notes.
