About the Division of GI Surgery
The Division of GI Surgery has well regarded clinical and educational programs in diseases of the GI tract.
Areas of Clinical Activity
- Upper GI: Gastroesophageal reflux, achalasia and swallowing disorders, hiatal hernia, gastric tumors, gastroparesis, pancreatic tumors, acute and chronic pancreatitis, liver tumors...
- Lower GI: Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, small bowel tumors, rectal prolapse, colon cancer rectal cancer, diverticulosis, diverticulitis...
- Nutritional disorders: Morbid obesity, enterocutaneous fistulas, short gut syndrome...
- Hernias: Inguinal (groin) hernias, ventral hernias, incisional hernias, parastomal hernias...
- Laparoscopy/Minimally Invasive: For all GI surgical procedures.
Areas of Educational Activity
Medical Students rotate as observers and team participants for 4-weeks at a time. Faculty are active in medical student lectures, tutorial groups and rounds. Dr. Farrell serves as Director of the Clerkship in Surgery.
General Surgery residents are integral to the function of the Division. Chief residents run two clinical services under the direction of the faculty. Faculty are active in resident education, and Dr. Koruda is Program Director for the General Surgery residency at UNC.
Fellows in Advanced Laparoscopy and GI Surgery serve as Clinical Instructors and advanced trainees. All faculty participate in the educational activity of the fellows. Drs. Farrell and Overby serve as Fellowship Directors.
