John van Aalst, MD

Two-and-a-half month-old Adam was born in India with Bartsocas-Papas syndrome, a rare condition characterized by cleft palate, fusing of bones in the hands and feet, and other various abnormalities.  Abandoned by his biological parents, he was adopted by newlyweds Jessica and Raja Paulraj.  While doctors in India gave the family little hope, they have found encouragement and support in the form Dr. van Aalst, Associate Professor with the UNC Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Baby Adam arrived at UNC Hospitals on November 10 and underwent surgery earlier this week to create eyelids.  He is expected to spend the next few months in Chapel Hill as he continues to undergo more surgeries.

Further information on Baby Adam is available on the ABC News site and the Paulraj family's blog.
